Sauna Wood Burning Stove Install in Barrel and Square Saunas

by | Sep 22, 2026 | Blog, Sauna Category

When the same outdoor sauna wood burning stove is installed in a square sauna and a barrel sauna, the sauna wood burning stove position, seating layout, and interior movement space will vary depending on the sauna structure.

In the two sauna case studies discussed in this article, the square sauna measures 2100mm in length, 1800mm in depth, and 2100mm in height. After installing the sauna wood burning stove, it can accommodate 2 people lying down comfortably, while the spacious interior allows 3–4 people to sit comfortably. With more than 4 people, the space may feel crowded.

The barrel sauna measures 1900mm in length, 1600mm in depth, and 1900mm in height. After installing the sauna wood burning stove, it comfortably accommodates 2 people sitting opposite each other. With more than 2 people, the interior space may feel crowded.

This article first introduces the sauna wood burning stove installation methods and space layouts for square and barrel saunas. It then covers the sauna wood burning stove dimensions, structure, sauna stone loading, ventilation design, and Alphasauna’s manufacturing capabilities, helping you understand how different sauna structures work with a sauna wood burning stove.

Square Sauna Outdoor : Stove Installation and Space Layout

This square sauna measures 2100mm in length, 1800mm in depth, and 2100mm in height. It is constructed with Japanese Cedar and features a front glass door.

The square structure provides clearly defined walls, floor space, and corners, allowing the sauna wood burning stove to be positioned near the entrance while keeping the main seating area on the opposite side and toward the back of the sauna.

Install the Stove Near the Door to Optimize Horizontal Space

In this layout, the sauna wood burning stove is installed on the left side of the entrance. By positioning the sauna wood burning stove near the front, the benches can extend along the opposite side and toward the back, reducing the stove’s horizontal footprint in the main seating area.

The stove door faces the entrance walkway, making it easier to add firewood, monitor the fire, and remove ashes.

Wooden Support Base and Stove Support

The sauna wood burning stove in the square sauna is equipped with a rectangular wooden support base underneath. The four heavy-duty stainless steel adjustable leveling legs at the bottom of the sauna wood burning stove sit directly on the wooden base, which provides a stable support surface.

Gaps are left between the base boards to provide ventilation space beneath the sauna wood burning stove. The adjustable leveling legs can be adjusted according to the installation surface to achieve the required height and level. Under standard installation conditions, the bottom of the sauna wood burning stove is approximately 100mm above the ground.

Seating Layout for the Square Sauna

The interior of this square sauna features two-tier stepped benches. Taking into account the sauna wood burning stove installation position, safety guard area, and required clearance around the stove, the space can be arranged for different numbers of users. With 2 people, the layout is comfortable and allows both users to lie down. With 3–4 people, it provides comfortable seating. When more than 4 people enter, the seating and movement space may feel crowded.

Therefore, the rated capacity of the sauna should be determined based on seating and lying requirements, as well as the space occupied by the sauna wood burning stove, rather than relying solely on the sauna’s external dimensions.

Barrel Saunas Outdoor: Precise Layout for Compact Spaces

This outdoor barrel sauna measures 1900mm in length, 1600mm in depth, and 1900mm in height. It also features Japanese Cedar and a front glass door.

Since the walls of a barrel sauna are curved, the usable interior space is more compact than its external dimensions suggest. The sauna wood burning stove installation position must account for the flat support surface, stove door operating direction, chimney placement, and the layout of the facing benches.

Installation in the Flat Central Area of the Sauna

In this barrel sauna, the sauna wood burning stove is installed in the flat central area of the interior and positioned against the wall.

This area provides a flat support surface for the sauna wood burning stove, so no additional rectangular wooden base is required. The stove is supported directly by the flat installation area inside the sauna.

Space Allocation Between the Sauna Stove and Seating

The barrel sauna features parallel facing benches, making it suitable for two people sitting opposite each other. Due to the sauna’s compact dimensions, the installed sauna wood burning stove occupies part of the interior space, taking up approximately the same amount of room as a two-person seating area.

With two people seated inside this barrel sauna, the space remains comfortable. When more than two people use it, the seating, sauna wood burning stove, and entry and exit areas become crowded. Therefore, this sauna design is more suitable for a compact, two-person layout.

Sauna Stove Ventilation Openings and Airflow Design

The sauna wood burning stove requires a continuous air supply for combustion. The sauna’s air intake and exhaust vents should be designed according to the sauna wood burning stove position and the structure of the sauna room.

Alphasauna uses corresponding ventilation layouts for square and barrel saunas, allowing air to enter through the intake vent, circulate through the interior, and exit through the exhaust vent.

Ventilation Design for the Wood-Burning Sauna Stove in a Square Sauna

A ventilation inlet is positioned at the bottom of the square sauna near the sauna wood burning stove, while upper and lower exhaust vents are installed on the opposite side.

The lower exhaust vent is located near the bottom of the opposite wall, and the upper exhaust vent is positioned above the backrest on the opposite side. The upper vent is adjustable, allowing the exhaust airflow to be regulated.

A 5–10cm ventilation gap is left beneath the door frame, working with the sauna wood burning stove air intake and the exhaust vents on the opposite side to create an airflow path.

The vent positions are planned together with the sauna wood burning stove, benches, and wall structure to avoid being blocked by base boards or decorative elements.

Ventilation Design for the Wood-Burning Sauna Stove in a Barrel Sauna

A ventilation inlet is positioned beneath or behind the sauna wood burning stove in the barrel sauna, while an exhaust vent is installed at the front of the sauna. The upper exhaust vent is adjustable and positioned at the front upper section to regulate indoor exhaust airflow.

The curved walls and compact interior space of the barrel sauna require the ventilation openings to be planned together with the sauna wood burning stove, sauna benches, and door position, keeping the open areas around the air intake and exhaust vents clear of obstructions from internal structures.

During the sauna manufacturing stage, Alphasauna incorporates the sauna wood burning stove position, ventilation openings, benches, and sauna structure into a unified set of design documents.

Based on the confirmed sauna wood burning stove specifications and applicable installation requirements, we determine the number, dimensions, and installation positions of the ventilation openings.

Wood-Burning Sauna Stove Dimensions and Structure

The sauna wood burning stove generates heat by burning wood, while smoke is discharged through the chimney. Installation planning needs to consider the stove’s dimensions, door orientation, chimney connection, bottom support, sauna stone loading, and interior sauna layout.

The external dimensions of the sauna wood burning stove only represent the footprint of the equipment itself. The actual installation space must also include the required operating and safety clearances on both sides, behind, and in front of the stove.

Sauna Wood Burning Stove Dimensions and Actual Installation Footprint

The maximum external width of this sauna wood burning stove is 491mm, and its maximum external depth is 555mm, including the stove door that extends forward. Based on the external dimensions of the sauna wood burning stove, its footprint is approximately 0.27㎡.

Since the sauna wood burning stove door is located at the front of the stove, adding firewood, monitoring combustion, and removing ashes all require access from the front. Therefore, the installation layout must account for more than just the sauna wood burning stove’s physical footprint.

In the actual installation layout, at least 150mm of clearance is required on both sides and behind the sauna wood burning stove. After adding the surrounding clearance, the total installation width is approximately 800mm, with a total depth of approximately 710mm. The overall installation footprint is approximately 0.56㎡.

These dimensions are used for preliminary layout planning and space verification. Final installation still needs to be confirmed based on the specific sauna structure, local installation requirements, and sauna wood burning stove configuration.

Safety Guard and Sauna Stone Loading Structure

A safety guard is installed around the sauna wood burning stove, creating both a protective barrier and a dedicated area for sauna stone loading. The sauna stones are placed around the sauna wood burning stove to absorb heat generated by the stove and support water pouring during use to produce steam.

Based on the loading requirements of this sauna wood burning stove, approximately 7–8 boxes of stones are required when using pebbles, while approximately 4–5 boxes are needed for other types of sauna stones.

Independent Stainless Steel Chimney and Rain Protection Components

The sauna wood burning stove is equipped with a separate straight stainless steel chimney that connects to the flue outlet on top of the stove during installation. The chimney is fitted with a rain cap and wind protection mesh at the top to cover the chimney opening.

The top of the chimney is equipped with a hollow galvanized iron rain cover approximately 3.5cm thick. It works with the chimney’s top structure to cover the relevant connection area and reduce the chance of rainwater entering the chimney directly.
