Fumigation Matters — Ensuring Sauna Materials Meet Global Standards

With global trade increasing, exported wood products must not only prioritize quality but also meet stringent quarantine standards in various countries. So, does the wood used in saunas require fumigation treatment? And does it meet the international standards required for export? This article will examine the definition of fumigation, its applicable scope, relevant national regulations, and the practical treatment methods for sauna wood.
What Is Fumigation? Why Does Sauna Wood Require Fumigation?
Fumigation is an internationally recognized method for disinfecting wood. It primarily uses specific gases, such as methyl bromide or phosphine, in a sealed environment to kill insects and bacteria. Its goal is to completely eliminate potential pests, eggs, and fungi in the wood, effectively preventing the international spread of pests and diseases. Whether the raw materials for sauna rooms require fumigation depends primarily on the following factors:
Is the Wood Unprocessed?
Natural solid wood that has not been subjected to high-temperature treatment may contain insect eggs or mold, making it more susceptible to fumigation requirements during export.
Are the Importing Country’s Quarantine Requirements Strict?
For example, countries and regions such as Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and the European Union have strict requirements for wood quality, making fumigation or heat treatment a basic requirement for customs clearance.
Do commonly used sauna woods meet fumigation or heat-treatment standards?
Common woods used in sauna construction include red cedar, hemlock, pine, and specially treated heat-treated wood. Whether these woods meet the fumigation or heat-treatment standards required for export depends primarily on their processing and handling.
Thermo Wood
Thermo Wood is treated in a high-temperature, oxygen-free environment, imparting insect, rot, and mildew resistance. It fully complies with the heat treatment standards set forth in ISPM 15 of the International Plant Protection Convention. This wood requires no additional fumigation treatment and is suitable for direct export and various practical applications.
Natural Solid Wood
Natural solid woods that have not been heat-treated or fumigated, such as red cedar, hemlock, and pine, pose potential insect and fungal risks and are generally required to be fumigated or heat-treated for export. Some countries may still require fumigation of wood that has been kiln-dried but not heat-treated. Therefore, using heat-treated wood or providing a fumigation certificate ensures smooth customs clearance.
Composite Panels
Plywood and multilayer boards undergo high-temperature and high-pressure treatment during production. This process generally meets insect repellent standards, making them exempt from fumigation.
Sauna Wood Fumigation Process and Instructions
To ensure our saunas meet customs quarantine standards in various countries during export, we strictly adhere to the internationally recognized ISPM 15 fumigation standard at every stage, from raw material procurement, production and processing, to final packaging and shipment. Whether exporting in bulk or full container, we carefully arrange the fumigation process based on the specific shipping method and provide legal and valid fumigation certificates and packaging labels. Below, we will detail our fumigation procedures in several key areas.
Is the Raw Material Fumigated During Procurement?
To ensure our sauna wood meets quarantine and environmental standards in various countries, Alphasauna rigorously fumigates the raw materials. We primarily use imported solid wood, including hemlock, red cedar, and pine. Prior to importing into China, this wood has undergone an initial round of fumigation by our suppliers in accordance with the ISPM 15 standard and is accompanied by a quarantine certificate of origin and fumigation certificate.

Do Finished Saunas Require Further Fumigation?
Although finished sauna rooms are generally not considered wood packaging materials, to ensure smooth customs clearance, we fully fumigate all exposed wood structures before shipment, especially for bulk exports.
Are the Packing Boxes Fumigated?
All wood packaging intended for export, such as solid wood pallets and crates, is treated according to ISPM 15 standards and stamped with a fumigation stamp to ensure compliance with customs and quarantine requirements in each country, preventing returns or delays.
Fumigation Process and Management
Before domestic processing and production, we determine whether to perform a secondary fumigation treatment based on the requirements of the exporting country and the customer’s shipping method. For countries that accept in-house fumigation, we typically perform centralized fumigation operations in a designated fumigation area within our factory, handled by a qualified third-party agency, and simultaneously issue a valid fumigation certificate.
For countries that require a customs certificate, centralized fumigation is carried out at a designated fumigation site, typically before packing and sealing, to ensure that all wood materials, including the crates and packaging, are fumigated. After fumigation, the relevant unit will stamp the wooden box with the IPPC fumigation seal and submit an official fumigation certificate as evidence for customs declaration and inspection in the destination country.
We implement strict management and record-keeping throughout the fumigation process, from raw material storage to finished product shipment, ensuring traceability of every piece of wood and every piece of packaging, laying a solid foundation for export compliance. Thanks to this standardized process, our sauna products can be successfully exported to countries and regions implementing the ISPM15 standard.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions are as follows:
Will Fumigation Affect the Quality and Color of Sauna Wood?
No. We follow international standards and use thermal fumigation with strictly controlled duration to maintain the wood’s structure and color, while also ensuring it remains suitable for subsequent processing and aesthetics.
Does the Fumigation Certificate Correspond to Specific Shipments? How Can It Be Verified?
Each fumigation certificate clearly indicates the batch number, container number, treatment unit, and time of shipment. Customers can verify the authenticity and validity of the certificate against the IPPC label on the packaging and shipping documents. For further verification, we are always available to provide an electronic copy or a scanned copy of the original.
If the Customer’s Destination Country Does Not Require Fumigation, Can This Step Be Skipped?
If you specify that the destination country does not require fumigation and the packaging material is exempted board, we can skip the fumigation process. However, we still recommend that the fumigation process be retained during export to prevent delays during transit or due to unannounced customs inspections.
Does Each Box Need to Be Individually Labeled with a Fumigation Label upon Export?
Yes. According to ISPM 15, each wooden box and pallet containing solid wood must be individually stamped with the IPPC fumigation stamp for customs inspection. We will verify each box before shipment to ensure all markings are correct.
If Fumigation-Exempt Materials Are Used, Is Fumigation Still Required?
If packaging materials are made entirely of exempt materials such as plywood or composite boards, fumigation is not required. However, if solid wood pallets or natural wood components are involved, fumigation is still recommended to ensure global compliance.
Is Fumigation Really Necessary for Exporting Sauna Wood Materials?
Yes, fumigation is often required for exporting sauna wood materials, especially to countries with strict quarantine regulations.
